The icon represents the Nativity: the Child is surrounded by the Virgin and Saint Joseph, the ox and the donkey. Framing the central scene are two male figures dressed in pink, their arms crossed over their chests in a sign of respect. From the Eye of God, or Eye of Providence / Omniscient Eye (symbol appearing in seventeenth century iconography) springs the star that indicated to the shepherds and the wise men the birthplace of the Child. Characteristics specific to the School of Jerusalem during the nineteenth century include the pastel chromatic palette, naive style, presence of inscriptions in Arabic, taste for the decorative, and border of colored bands.
