Israeli attacks turn the Shuja‘iyya neighborhood in the eastern part of Gaza City into a scene of utter devastation, with entire buildings flattened and thousands forced to flee. During the ceasefire on 26 July, many Palestinians went back to Shuja‘iyya to inspect the damage; medics went to rescue the injured and collect bodies. Dozens of bodies were collected but many remained because Palestinians lacked the necessary equipment to dig through the debris. Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians and injured around 5,000.
