A group photograph showing the participants of the Katowice Conference—the first conference of the Hovevei Zion movement.
Seated, right to left: Yaakov Deiches; Yisrael Michel Rabinowitz; Alexander Zederbaum (ARZ); David Friedman; Yehuda Leib Pinsker; Shmuel Mohilever; David Gordon; Leib Klivanski; Kalonymus Ze’ev Wissotzky.
Among those standing in the back can be seen, among others, Yosef Chazanovitz and Shaul Pinchas Rabinowitz (ShPR).
On the photo’s frame, Dr. Yosef Chazanovitz wrote its title in Hebrew, in ink. In the right corner of the frame the place of the photograph was printed, and in the left corner the photographer’s name: P. Krause.
On the back of the board, a stamp was impressed reading “Ginzey Yosef in Jerusalem,” indicating that the photograph was donated to the National Library by Dr. Yosef Chazanovitz, Białystok, in the late nineteenth century or the early twentieth century.
