Palestinian residents and Israeli settlers walking on separate sides of Shuhada Street in the Old City of Hebron. Shuhada Street, once the main commercial street of Hebron, has been closed to Palestinian cars since 1994 and to most Palestinian pedestrians since 2001. Dozens of Palestinian shops were forced to close down due to Israeli military orders; these orders killed all commercial life, which affected hundreds of Palestinians. Many Palestinians, due to the harsh conditions in the Old City, left the area.
