This thematic chronology presents the events related to European (and American, at a later stage) interference in internal Ottoman affairs, including Christian holy sites, non-Muslim communities, extra-territorial privileges enjoyed by foreigners, and land issues. An important manifestation of this interference was represented by the Capitulations system that started as a unilateral Ottoman gracious gesture in trade matters and developed into unbreakable and overextending Ottoman obligations.
